Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: Cheltenham
Duration: 6 months
Rate: £55 per hour - Umbrella - Inside IR35


As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be very much part of a project team delivering all aspects of the mechanical engineering which supports the overall development of our Power Distribution and Control Systems solutions. You will be expected to influence the design decisions, material/process selections and other facets related to the overall design intent and ultimately through into production.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Technical support for the mechanical design - Developing 3D Mechanical design data with an understanding on customer requirements and product performance characteristics
  • Determining the production techniques & design concept to meet business objectives
  • Experience of design parts around - sheet metal fabrication, Plastic thermo-injection moulding & machined parts
  • Drafting experience using MBD/PMI (Model Based Definition) together with Geometrical Tolerancing (ASME Y14.5)
  • Liaison with other development engineering teams to deliver a robust overall design
  • Effective and appropriate use of prototyping techniques to de-risk the development
  • Interface for technical information directly with other areas of the business and project team
  • Able to work within a team of mechanical engineers to develop complex assemblies, liaison with the electrical and systems engineering teams to deliver electromechanical solutions.
  • An appreciation of Design for Manufacture, assembly, and test along with Design for Cost.
  • Ensure design is in accordance with company and industry standards and processes.
  • An appreciation / exposure to thermal and/or structural engineering analysis along with material science


A bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited university/college or similar level of knowledge / experience.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Experience in creating innovative, complex mechanical designs for new product development, preferably in a safety critical environment.
  • Aviation interest ideally, however medical devices or other regulated / safety critical industrial applications will be considered.
  • Experience of product design and development activities embracing design for manufacture, value engineering, Design for Six Sigma.
  • Awareness of using a PLM system such as Team-centre or Windchill
  • Working knowledge of MRP/ERP systems & IT
  • Comfortable working in a highly collaborative teams
  • Strong awareness on using 3D modelling software preferably Siemens NX, an awareness of ANSYS thermal and structural packages. And applications such as Apriori, Granta and AutoCrear.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
